Contender Daiane Silva in Coma After Weight Cut Complications
MMA fighter Daiane Silva remains in a coma after a challenging weight cut for Bellator London. The MMA community is reeling from the shocking news.
Daiane Silva Hospitalized After Failed Weight Cut
MMA fighter Daiane Silva remains hospitalized in London five weeks after a botched weight cut led to her being placed in an induced coma. The 29-year-old Brazilian athlete was preparing for her Bellator London debut against Eman Almudhaf on September 14 when complications arose during her weight cut.
Complications During Dehydration
While attempting to reach the featherweight limit, a weight class she had never competed in professionally, Silva fell ill due to severe dehydration. She suffered kidney failure and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors placed her in an induced coma. Silva is currently sedated, and it is unclear what after-effects may occur once she recovers.
Manager Confirms Status Amid Silence from Bellator
Silva’s manager, Alex Davis, confirmed her condition, stating:
“As Daiane made weight for her debut in Bellator, she suffered an accident due to dehydration. She was promptly seen by the doctor, was rushed to the hospital in delicate condition, was admitted to intensive care. Her condition was serious, but since, she has been improving steadily and our hope is that she recovers fully.”
Despite multiple requests for comment, Bellator officials have not responded. The promotion has flown one of Silva’s friends from Brazil to be with her at the hospital, providing daily updates on her recovery.
Cris Cyborg Expresses Concern
Cris Cyborg, under whose promotion Silva began her MMA career, spoke about the situation during a post-fight media scrum in Saudi Arabia:
“Really sad. ‘Leidy Dai’ had a tough cut. I know when you have a tough cut, the responsible for you is your trainers, is your coach around you. I think you have to be cut safe and make an agreement with the event and I know they did, but the corner didn’t follow the rules. It’s really sad. I hope she recovers fast.”
A Promising Career Put on Hold
Silva started her MMA career under Nação Cyborg in October 2021, competing at 155 pounds. She took the fight against Almudhaf on short notice at featherweight. Days before the event, Silva acknowledged the challenges ahead:
“It will hurt. That’s all I can say. I took this fight on 14 days’ notice, but I’m ready because I train four times a day here at CM [System] and we train hard every day. But as for the weight, I’m big and tall, and I have a high muscle mass percentage so it’s complicated for me, but this is the war.”
Community Reacts with Shock and Concern
The MMA community has been shaken by the news, highlighting the dangers of extreme weight cutting. Fans and fellow fighters have expressed their support and concern for Silva’s recovery. Prominent sports journalists have criticized the lack of transparency from Bellator and the Professional Fighters League (PFL), which recently acquired Bellator.
Awaiting Updates on Silva’s Recovery
As Silva remains hospitalized, the MMA world anxiously awaits updates on her condition. The situation underscores the risks fighters take and raises questions about weight-cutting practices in the sport.
